New hope for spinal cord injury sufferers

New research involving nanoparticles which give spinal cord nerves the ability to repair themselves and have been successfully tried on paralysed rats may offer hope to those who have suffered from a devastating personal injury to the back or neck.

A researcher from Purdue University in Indianapolis said they were surprised to discover the particles, or micelles, which are 100 times smaller than red blood cells and have an outer coating of polyethylene glycol, can not only seal the site of a spinal injury, preventing further damage but also helped the repair of damaged nerve tissue by 60%.

One of the primary causes of paralysis and disability following an accident is the death of nerve cells through the body's biochemical system. It seems that the disabled rats used in the research were able to walk after being injected in their tails with the nanoparticles

Many sufferers from spinal cord injury have been able to make personal injury compensation claims to gain damages through using no win no fee lawyers and the resulting financial help goes some way to coping with their disability which has occurred through no fault of their own.
