Car accident drunk driver will go to jail

A former figure skating world champion has been sent to prison and ordered to pay substantial car accident compensation after a fatal drunk driving accident.

Two time gold medallist Maxim Staviski, partner of Albena Denkova, was found guilty of driving with more than double the country's legal alcohol limit after a crash in August 2007. A 23 year-old man was killed in the road traffic accident and his 18-year-old fiancé was left in a coma.

On January 30th 2008, a Bulgarian court sentenced Staviski, a naturalised Russian, to a two-years-and-six month suspended jail term with a five-year probation period, after the skater pleaded guilty to all charges.

However, both sets of victims' parents appealed against the suspended sentence and the car accident compensation awarded by the court.

Now, a three member panel of Burgas Appellate Court have reversed the suspended sentence and Staviski will go to prison.

Originally the court had ordered the accused to pay a total of 170,000 Bulgarian leva (approximately £79,600) to the families of the victims, but the car accident compensation amount has been increased to 270,000 leva (approx £126,350). Staviski plans to appeal the ruling.
