A former construction worker has won an undisclosed sum of workplace injury compensation after an 18ft fall inside a cooling tower left him with multiple injuries, including serious ones to his head, chest and pelvis.
The 48-year-old Oxfordshire man now suffers brain damage, and this, in conjunction with the effects of his other injuries, means he now needs 24 hour care.
The judge hearing the workplace injury compensation claim at Sheffield Crown Court listened to how the claimant now has difficulty with basic mobility, eating, drinking, dressing himself and speaking. Additionally, the father-of-three now is now plagued by memory problems and epilepsy.
Speaking after the settlement, the claimant's wife described just how important the workplace injury compensation would be to their futures. She said, "Without the settlement we would constantly be worrying about where the money was coming from for his physiotherapy, communication aids, wheelchairs, and anything else that crops up in the future."The funds, for example, have allowed us to move to a house that is far more suitable."
The personal injury lawyer who represented the claim commented, "The lives of an entire family have been irreversibly and catastrophically altered by the fall, which could have been prevented had the correct health and safety procedures been carried out."
Adding that the family "could never be truly compensated for what has happened but now they can rest assured that whatever they need in the future will be provided for."
