A plastic manufacturer from Berkshire has been fined after an employee severed his finger in an accident at work.
The man had been working at the Corby factory when his finger became trapped in a colour dosing machine which is used to add colour to plastic.
The work accident left the man with a personal injury that was so severe his middle finger had to be amputated above the knuckle. He was also forced to undergo physiotherapy for ten months and was unable to return to his job as a factory worker for several weeks.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that a safety guard, which worked to prevent workers from coming into contact with moving parts of the machine, had not been in place at the time of the accident.
The company appeared at Corby Magistrates Court where they were fined £7,000 and ordered to pay court costs of £4,677, after admitting a breach of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.
A HSE inspector speaking after the hearing stated that had the safety guard been in place the accident at work would have been avoided.
