Two companies based in Cambridgeshire have been fined after an employee broke his back in a fall from height accident while at work.
The 24-year-old pipe fitter had been working at a business park in Sutton to fit pipes ready for the installation of a moulding machine.
He had been working in a roof void over a suspended ceiling and was using a crawl board to travel along the work area. Unfortunately, whilst attempting to get to his work position the man fell more than six metres onto the solid factory floor below.
The man sustained serious personal injuries in the work accident, including fractures to his skull, ribs and spine.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that despite being issued a safety harness the worker was unable to use it effectively due to missing attachment points in the roof void.
The company hiring the worker was fined around £50,000 after admitting a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act at Cambridge Crown Court. The sub-contracting company involved was also fined more than £18,000 as a result of the fall from height accident.
