An Isle of Man ferry worker suffered a work injury, when he fell through a metal grating gashing his leg open in August 2010 at King Edward Pier, Douglas harbour, resulting in a five-figure fine for the government department responsible for the pier's maintenance.
The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) admitted two health and safety charges at a court hearing in the island. By pleading guilty the DOI had its fine reduced from £24,000 to £16,000 .
The court had heard that the metal grating on which the victim had been standing as he handled mooring ropes for the ferry had undergone an inspection only five months prior to the accident.
The employee had to stay in hospital for treatment on his leg injury before he was able to return to work.
Immediately after the personal injury incident a further inspection of the pier was made and repairs carried out.
The DOI is responsible for maintaining the Isle of Man's highways network, harbours and port facilities, planning and building control and key government buildings.
Now that liability for the work-related accident has been established, the employee could now make a compensation claim against the department for his pain and suffering.
