An electrician in Cumbria may be entitled to make a compensation claim for serious work injuries after he was engulfed in a fireball in an accident at work.
The 62-year-old worker, and his apprentice, had been sent to clear the debris from a fuse box where there had been a fire the previous day and also to prevent access to the box by plating it up. In order to avoid any delay in the factory's production output the company had not isolated the electricity supply and this had severe consequences for the electricians.
As they worked on the box both men were engulfed by flames.
The incident left the electrician with burns to 47% of his body. He was placed in intensive care for the following six weeks, spending four of those weeks in a coma. The apprentice did not sustain such severe personal injury.
On leaving the hospital the electrician had to wear a protective suit and, it is reported, still endures pain due to his burns. He has trouble gripping with his hands and also suffers from shortness of breath which has prevented him from returning to work.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has investigated the incident which caused the work injuries and has now prosecuted the firm. It has had to pay a fine of £90,000.
