The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has used the example of a work accident in Esher, Surrey, to remind employers of the importance of making appropriate risk assessments.
The Esher work injury case involved a dairy company's employee suffering a fall from height as a loosely-secured grille came loose over a pit. The company pleaded guilty last month to endangering the employee's health, and was fined £18,000 plus costs. The man involved has not yet announced whether he intends to make a compensation claim as a result of the personal injury suffered.
An HSE spokesperson said, "In this case the employer failed to adequately assess the risks associated with the task of emptying the pit. If a suitable risk assessment had been undertaken it should have identified the poor systems of work being used and this accident could have been easily avoided. The employee who fell received substantial injuries, which will have a lasting effect on his quality of life and as a result he will not be able to return to work.
"Employers should remember that falls remain one of the biggest killers of workers and in most cases the precautions needed are simple. There is ample free guidance readily available from HSE to help companies take the right action."
Assistance with undertaking risk assessments is available from the HSE and various private companies. Assistance with work accident compensation claims is available from no win, no fee solicitors.
