Lord Young tackles HSE policies

According to figures released by the Health and safety executive (HSE), 1.2 million workers suffered a work accident in 2009/10.

Due to staff sickness from accidents at work, 4.7 million working days were lost to the UK industry last year and 180 workers were killed at work during 2009.

Lord Young has been asked by the Prime Minister to review health and safety law and practises which has received the full support of the HSE.

In a letter published on the HSE website, Judith Hackett, chair of the organisation, said,
"We in HSE have said for some time that health and safety is being used by too many as a convenient excuse to hide behind."

Monthly myth busters are now posted on the HSE website to put an end to rumours about false HSE legislation and clarify which decisions have been recommended by the HSE and which decisions are made by employers.

Many employers will be waiting to see the results of the HSE legislation shake-up to see if it will help decrease the work accident figures.
