Ashton United football club faces an uncertain future after it lost an appeal to overturn a £32,000 work accident claim of a player who suffered an appalling personal injury in a tackle during a match.
Former Altrincham striker Marcus Hallows suffered a broken tibia and fibula in an incident with defender Danny White during the Conference North match between the clubs in 2005.
The forward's injuries were so severe that his heart stopped beating en route to the hospital.
The footballer claimed against the club for potential loss of earnings after his injuries forced him to retire.
Ashton's club chairman David Aspinall said, "At the outset of the proceedings, Ashton United clearly demonstrated that it did not have the financial means to meet any substantial claim from either its own funds or assets."
The work accident compensation claim is likely to have serious implications on the future of the club which is experiencing severe financial difficulties.
