A semi-professional footballer from Hertfordshire has been awarded £9,500 in personal injury compensation after making a work accident claim for the injuries he sustained when a staircase at his workplace, a printing factory, collapsed.
The 27-year-old, who once enjoyed a successful lower-league career with Milton Keynes City, was forced to retire from his semi-professional career last spring. It is thought that this forced retirement was a significant factor in the man's decision to pursue a work accident claim.
The claimant explained, "I was devastated when I was told I would have to give up football. I was having a successful career as a semi-professional player and it was all destroyed because those stairs were not well maintained."
Although he has had to give up his place in the Milton Keynes City team the claimant is still able to play football. However, the injuries he sustained to his ankle and knee mean that this has had to be with a Sunday league team, where the level of competition is less intense and physically demanding.
Insurers acting for the man's former employers admitted liability for the work accident claim, clearing the way for them to reach settlement with his personal injury solicitor.
