A former welder who suffered horrific burns to his face following an accident at work is set to receive a 100 percent compensation settlement following an admission of liability from his former employer.
The 58-year-old from Cockermouth, Cumbria, was welding when he ignited some highly flammable terephthalic acid, which then caused a "fireball" to engulf his face.
The claimant explained his ordeal, which resulted in him needing to spend two-and-half weeks in hospital being treated for facial burns. "A colleague helped to get the flames out and I ran to put water on my face," he said.
Adding, "To be honest I actually felt almost no pain at all, because I was in shock. But later in A&E, an incredible pain kicked in and my face swelled to the size of a pumpkin."
He also said that the impact of the injuries has changed his life and that now, even two years on, he still experiences significant pain on cold days when his "skin tightens".
His no win, no fee solicitor described the accident at work as "entirely preventable" and placed blame for it firmly at the feet of the man's employer when he said, "The work he was asked to do should have been planned in advance and the dangers identified."He added, "There was 380 tons of this material in the silo on a site where health and safety should have been paramount."
"We are proceeding with a civil action on his behalf to reach a settlement which will compensate him financially for his pain and suffering both physical and psychological."
Although the man's employer has admitted liability for the incident, an accident at work compensation settlement still needs to be negotiated.
