An industrial waste company in Trafford, near Manchester, has been fined after an employee sustained severe personal injuries in an accident at work.
The 60-year-old employee had been working at the company's plant in Trafford Park when he was hit by a 35 tonne forklift truck which was reversing.
The man suffered life threatening injuries in the work accident, sustaining multiple fractures and internal injuries. The damage was so severe that he was forced to remain in hospital for treatment for several months.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the company had not organised suitable safety provisions to protect workers from the onsite vehicles.
The waste company appeared at Trafford Magistrates' Court where it admitted to a breach in Workplace Regulations. It was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £9,410 in court costs.
The prosecuting HSE inspector stated after the hearing that the accident at work could have been prevented had the right safety systems been put in place.
