A teenager, who suffered a leg injury after being shot by an air rifle whilst camping, has been awarded £200 in personal injury compensation.
The 17-year-old had been camping with friends on a field in Seaham, County Durham, when two men dressed in camouflage gear and carrying an air rifle approached them.
The men had warned the friends to look out for ‘dangerous people like us' before they shot the teenager with the air rifle in the back of his leg.
When the boy checked his leg after the incident he found an air rifle pellet lodged in the back of his knee.
Although the injury did not cause a severe personal injury, it could have been much worse and has left the boy with permanent scars.
Durham Crown Court heard how the attacker had previous convictions for assault and causing criminal damage. The man was warned that if he continued, after this incident, with his reckless and violent behaviour towards others than he would end up in custody.
The shooter has been given a 12-month community order, 180 hours' unpaid work and has been ordered to pay the teenager £200 in personal injury compensation.
