A senior surgeon is accused of carrying out operations he was not competent to do and performing unnecessary surgery, although no medical negligence claims have been reported.
Main findings of an investigation were that invoices were sent for operations never carried out and that the surgeon was not expert in some surgical work he was routinely carrying out.
The surgeon's billing habits are now subject to potential criminal investigation. It is a scandal that highlights how authorities should better regulate medics, it was claimed.
According to a report in the Australian media, the surgeon was said to have overstated his surgical experience on his CV, wrongly indicating his level of experience and training.
Also, he was said to have performed untried surgery that was harmful and contained flaws. He has been suspended on full pay since an earlier draft report.
Four other doctors complained about poor work carried out by the surgeon.
In his defence, the surgeon disputed he had exercised incorrect clinical judgment, and he said his invoicing procedures were the same as colleagues.
The full report of his activities was damning - clinical performance descriptions included decision-making and care standards were unacceptable.
And during the investigation, verbal testing about basic medical science saw him fail badly, it was reported. No clinical or medical negligence compensation claim issues were highlighted.
