Army veteran with spinal injury aids Poppy Appeal 2010

Army veteran 36-year-old Paul McClintock suffered a spinal injury from an accident at work during training with the Royal Greenjackets, resulting in him being disabled and regularly in pain.

The accident left him in a wheelchair but he was not deterred from carrying on with his life. He decided to raise money this year for the Royal British Legion, which helps war veterans, those still serving and those who are back home after sustaining injuries.

Mr McClintock, who wheeled himself 125 miles from Berwick upon Tweed to Croft-on-Tees, hence his naming the trek Tweed2Tees, raised an impressive £6,750 for the 2010 Poppy Appeal.

The cheque was handed to the north east manager for the Royal British Legion, Andrew Drake who said, "Paul's epic trek has been a fantastic achievement…Paul is a fine example of someone who refuses to let his disability hinder his helping others who are in need."

Mr McClintock said of his accomplishment, "I'm just doing my bit for the legion so they can help people out there who need their support, like I did. The legion has always been there for me at every stage since I came out of the Army. Now it's my turn to do something back for them."

Although there is an official government Services compensation scheme for people who have suffered personal injury through military work, the Royal British Legion provides extra financial and practical support for Servicemen and women both serving and retired. If you would like to help the Royal British Legion, simply go onto their website.

A work-related spinal injury may mean the sufferer cannot resume activities as fully as before the accident but with the latest equipment many can have an enjoyable and useful life.
