A bus driver from Cumbria has won £3,000 in personal injury compensation after suffering a spinal injury through the repetitive lifting of a heavy cash container.
Grant Ritson made the successful work accident claim against Stagecoach Cumbria after having to lift the heavy machine off the floor every time a passenger bought a ticket. He had to undertake such action because the cash machine was incompatible with the vehicle he was driving and so couldn't be attached to the bus.
Whitehaven County Court heard how, on the day he suffered his spinal injury, Mr Ritson had notified a superior about the problem but was instructed to continue with his journey and was told, "We will sort this out when you come back."
Before he could complete his duties, however, the driver's back "suddenly went" and he was unable to continue working. A relief driver was sent out and Mr Ritson suffered pain because of the spinal injury for three months.
Finding in favour of Mr Ritson, a judge ordered his employers to pay personal injury compensation of £3,000.
