Medical negligence solicitors have secured a misdiagnosis compensation settlement for a former lecturer who is now paralysed as a result of a hospital's failure to diagnose a compressed abscess on his spine.
Initially, doctors at the West Midlands hospital where he was treated for neck and shoulder pain said that he had simply pulled a muscle while performing DIY work at home.
It was only after five days in hospital and the onset of paralysis that the misdiagnosis compensation claimant was transferred to a hospital in Birmingham, where an MRI investigation revealed the abscess compressing his spine.
Speaking after the resolution of his case, the artist, who is now wheelchair-bound and paralysed, gave some insight into the impact of the hospital's error and also offered some advice to other hospital patients.
He said, "The encounter I had at Russells Hall Hospital in March 2003 changed me from being a socially skilled individual and useful member of my family to complete dependency and in almost constant pain.
"I now want others to realise that they should not be complacent when seeking help from the NHS.
"Everyone should be vigilant when an in-patient, and family and friends must be prepared to complain and complain again loud and clear if they have any concerns."
His lawyers succeeded in securing a misdiagnosis compensation payout of £825,000.
