A sign company in the East Midlands has been fined after an employee suffered a fractured neck in an accident at work.
The 44-year-old, from Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, had been using a vehicle-mounted lift to take down a sign from a building in Hucknall High Street when the work accident took place.
The worker had been standing in the basket of the lift but as it elevated one of the rods which kept the basket level was damaged and caused the basket to flip over. The man fell 1.5 metres to the ground and suffered severe personal injuries including a broken neck.
He was in hospital for six days and when discharged was unable to carry out routine tasks. He was forced to take nine months off work while he recovered.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the company had failed to ensure that the lift was sufficiently examined in the six months prior to the work accident.
The sign company pleaded guilty to breaching the Lifting Operations Regulations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court. It was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay court costs of £8,032.
An HSE inspector speaking after the hearing commented that the accident at work could have been avoided had the company fulfilled their legal requirement to regularly examine equipment.
