A schoolboy from Suffolk has been awarded £7,500 in personal injury compensation after sustaining a severe head injury whilst in the playground.
The 10-year-old from Queensway in Haverhill had been playing with friends in the playground of his primary school when he fell nearly five feet from a climbing frame onto the concrete floor below.
The boy suffered a fractured skull in the playground accident as well as a bleed to the brain. Due to the severity of his personal injuries, he was forced to miss ten weeks of school and now faces an increased risk of epilepsy.
Although the mother of the boy claims not to blame the school, she launched a claim for compensation in an attempt to protect other pupils from suffering a similar accident.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that Suffolk County Council had ignored requirements to install an impact absorbent surface underneath the climbing frame.
Since the claim for personal injury compensation, the council has been fined £48,000 for breaching health and safety acts across several locations in the area, including the primary school.
