School-related injuries are costing the UK around £16,000 in accident compensation a day.
This fact has prompted criticism from some quarters. A sociologist from Kent University said that the regularity of claims may be restricting children's opportunities to develop. "You end up not doing things in the best interest of the child but in such a way as to minimise legal action," he said.
However, a spokesperson from the the Department for Children, Schools and Families appeared to debunk this attitude by explaining how only deserving accident compensation claims receive settlement. "Schools are generally safe places but accidents happen. Deciding whether compensation is due will be a matter for the courts if and when cases are brought," he said.
Nationwide, in 2008/09 the cost of school-related accident compensation claims reached £2.8 million, including no win, no fee solicitor fees, which - while up on the amount paid the previous year - is relatively tiny when compared to the total amount paid for other kinds of litigation, such as accident at work claims.
