Two roofers have been given suspended sentences after an office worker from Derbyshire suffered serious personal injuries in an accident at work.
The office worker had been sat at her desk when a roll of roofing felt crashed through the skylight and struck her on the shoulder. The roofing felt, which weighed approximately 37kg, hit the woman with such force she sustained serious injuries to her head, shoulder and arm and required hospital treatment.
The injuries were so severe she was unable to return to work for two weeks whilst she recovered.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into the work accident revealed that the roofing contractors that were being used had failed to organise adequate safety protection before carrying out the re-felting work.
Due to the lack of safety guards, one of the rolls of roofing felt being moved fell through the unguarded skylight causing the personal injuries.
Both roofers involved admitted breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act and were given suspended sentences. They were also ordered to complete 280 hours of community service and pay court costs of £2,114.
An HSE Inspector stated after the hearing that the accident at work could have easily been prevented had the correct safety guards been put in place.
