As heavy rain and winds pounded the South Coast, it was bound to cause weather-related road traffic accidents, but two taxi passengers in Chichester, West Sussex, got the shock of their lives when the cab they were in plunged into Chichester canal basin and duly sank.
The accident happened at 9.45pm on a Saturday. The driver and the two passengers were thrown a life ring and helped back to the bank at Canal Wharf.
All persons recovered from the water after the accident were treated for shock, but no-one required had to be treated in hospital.
Police believe that the taxi's brakes failed as a result of the weather - the vehicle left the road and dived into the canal.
The vehicle was recovered on the Monday when a mobile crane hauled the waterlogged black cab out of the canal - it is believed police will now investigate the vehicle for any defects.
No arrests were made in connection with the road traffic accident, but the taxi passengers could still make a personal injury compensation claim for any pain or trauma should they manifest themselves later.
