Kinshasa accident leaves hundreds injured

At least 17 people have died and hundreds more are feared to have suffered serious personal injuries after an aeroplane crashed into a busy marketplace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The tragic incident happened in the capital of Kinshasa and saw the Antonov 26 cargo plane crash at 10.30am on the 4th October after taking off from the city's airport only three miles away.

The twin turboprop was operated by Congolese airline, Africa 1, and everybody on board is believed to have died in the plane crash.

Local houses are reported to have been set alight in the incident and hundreds of people who were visiting the market were caught up in the disaster.

It is believed that the crew of the doomed aeroplane were Russian but no official details, either of their nationality or of the numbers killed, have yet been confirmed.

Local sources have confirmed that a number of personal injury compensation claims are likely to be made as a result of the plane crash.
