A Welsh train driver who suffered career-ending back injuries has been awarded almost £80,000 in personal injury compensation.
The Rhondda man was sitting in a staff room at Cardiff Central Station when his plastic chair broke, causing him to fall heavily to the ground.
Telling of the work accident, the train driver said: "Initially it was a shock and then I began feeling discomfort and pain very soon afterwards. I thought that by resting my back for a few days it would be okay, but the pain just got worse.
"I could hardly move, I couldn't drive my car and the pain made me feel sick.
"Although I took painkillers, they didn't seem to offer much comfort and when I returned to work it was very difficult. The pain was intense and I began feeling numbness in my right leg."
A number of visits to doctors and physiotherapists failed to stop the pain and the 51-year-old train driver was eventually required to resign from his job.
He subsequently decided to make a compensation claim and employed the services of a personal injury solicitor to help him in his bid for damages.
Speaking after winning the train driver personal injury compensation of nearly £80,000, the work accident lawyer said: "As well as the pain and suffering endured by my client, he's been left unemployed by this accident which was easily preventable.
"Because he is not skilled in other areas it is now very difficult for him to find alternative employment."
