Personal injury claims following injuries suffered at hair salons is being blamed on a lack of regulation in the hairdressing sector.
According to the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), too many hairdressers are going into business without appropriate preparation due to the lax regulation of the industry.
A spokesperson from the body said: "Anyone can pick up a pair of scissors and call themselves a hairdresser, with or without training and qualifications."
Standards in the sector are currently monitored by the Hairdressing Council, but registration as a qualified professional in this industry is not mandatory, meaning that the council's jurisdiction is limited.
It said that this state of affairs is "absolutely shocking", especially given that allergic reactions to dyes and other compounds can lead to "severe pain, scarring, depression and anxiety" for which personal injury claims will often be made.
