Woman seeks compensation for surgical burn injuries

An 83-year-old woman has launched a medical negligence compensation claim after suffering serious personal injury during a routine operation.

The pensioner had been admitted to Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester to have the battery on her pace-maker replaced. However, during the routine surgery the disinfecting fluid that had been used to sterilise the area ignited and led to a significant fire.

The incident was so serious that the woman under surgery was severely burnt and one of the nurses in attendance required immediate trauma counselling to recover from the dramatic accident.

The University Hospital of South Manchester Trust finally apologised to the patient a year after the incident took place, as well as accepting full responsibility.

The woman's son-in-law spoke out about the anger the family had felt as a result of the hospital's reluctance to admit fault and make an apology.

The claim for medical negligence compensation is now in progress following the NHS Trust's admission of liability.
