A former council worker from Cumbria has launched an asbestos exposure claim for £200,000 after developing mesothelioma, a disease known to be caused by inhalation of asbestos fibres.
The 72-year-old is launching the compensation claim against two of his former employers after claiming that he was exposed to the deadly asbestos material during his time working at Carlisle City Council and for HM Prison Service.
The man was first exposed to the asbestos dust while working as an apprentice plumber between 1954 and 1963. He later suffered further exposure during 1972 and 1999 whilst working in the prison service which brought him into contact with boilers and pipe work that were clad in asbestos.
In October 2010 the claimant developed his first symptoms of mesothelioma, which included acute pain, shortness of breath and coughing. He was also forced to endure surgery to remove fluid from his chest.
The man is now seeking asbestos exposure compensation from his former employers, claiming that they both failed to provide adequate training, protective equipment and negligently exposed him to a hazardous substance without giving him warning of the potential dangers.
