A passenger injury compensation claim is likely to be made after a man was seriously injured and a woman killed when a gangway onto a cruise ship collapsed.
The ship, MSC Splendida, was docked at the Italian port of Genoa and was taking on passengers when the gangway gave way as two passengers were trying to board the vessel. The male and female passengers, both aged 65, fell 30ft into the sea.
Crew members and workers at the dock jumped into the water to try to rescue the two passengers but the woman was declared dead at the scene and her husband suffered severe head injuries.
The cruise liner was destined for a tour of the Mediterranean, stopping off at Marseilles, Barcelona, Tunis, Malta, Messina and Civitavecchia.
The incident is being treated as culpable homicide, although the exact cause of the tragedy has not yet been determined.
MSC Cruises, which owns the boat, blamed the incident on the Genoa port authorities responsible for the walkway being used.
If the port is found to be negligent of failing to secure the gangway sufficiently, a passenger injury compensation claim could be made against it.
