The advice follows letters to newspapers from residents concerned that following Dundee City Council's advice on clearing and gritting might open them to liability for litigation.
"A number of years ago, members of the public were being advised not to clear paths by themselves because, if we did and someone fell on the cleared area and hurt themselves, the person clearing the path could be sued," one resident wrote.
However, one local no win, no fee solicitor said that he believed such a scenario was extremely unlikely in Scotland.
"I struggle to conceive of circumstances in which a person who has intended to help neighbours or pedestrians by clearing a path could end up on the wrong side of the law - unless it could be proven the action was in some way careless or reckless," he said.
Another no win, no fee solicitor echoed this view when he stated that it "all comes down to common sense really".
