A no-win, no-fee lawyer has secured a work injury compensation settlement for a former English teacher who developed nodules on her vocal chords as a result of struggling to make herself heard above environmental noise outside the classroom.
The no win, no fee lawyer presented a strong case, describing how the 50-year-old had to undergo extensive speech therapy in order to try to minimise the damage caused to her voice.
However, despite both the therapy and later surgery, the claimant still becomes hoarse and uncomfortable after speaking for anything other than short periods.
In fact, the problem became so bad that she was compelled to quit her teaching job. She explains, "Teaching was my calling, I adored the classroom and miss it so much, but the problems with my voice make it impossible for me to ever go back.
"I even have to think twice about day-to-day things, like speaking on the phone to my dad in Scotland as my voice is not strong enough to maintain a conversation for any length of time."
The woman's no win, no fee lawyer indicated her belief that personal injury could have been avoided if the woman's employer, a London council, had offered an early response to the woman's concerns for her own health and safety.
The case was settled for £145,000 injury compensation.
