Accident payout blown

A man who blew his £60,000 no-win, no-fee compensation settlement on drugs has escaped a jail sentence after being prosecuted at Swindon Crown Court under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The judge explained his decision. "It seems to me that this is a point in your life now where you will benefit from the assistance that the probation service propose," he said.

Adding, "I am going to follow that recommendation and put the ball in your court to see if you can assist yourself."

The former no-win, no-fee compensation claimant was prosecuted following a raid by police on his house, during which they found herbal cannabis and cannabis resin.

The court heard that the defendant had become addicted to cannabis as a result of self-medicating with the substance for the pain caused by his accident injuries.

However, after he spent the whole of his no-win, no-fee compensation on the drug he then took to dealing cannabis in order to be able to support his addiction.

Defending, his solicitor commented, "He didn't realise he had such a problem until he was reduced to selling bits of cannabis to friends. This has brought him up short."
