An inquest has heard that a 77-year-old man who died in April had contracted mesothelioma.
The Cheshunt man had been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma a year before his death, following nine years of asbestos exposure from his work in the building industry.
The former builder worked in the trade between 1953 and 1964 before the ban on the substance came into fruition.
Coroner Edward Thomas explained to Hatfield Coroner's Court that mesothelioma is common among people exposed to asbestos and that the symptoms of the disease can take years to manifest.
Despite the ban across the UK on all types of asbestos, people can still be exposed to the deadly substance if any remaining asbestos is disturbed.
Industrial disease was found to be the cause of death. It was not reported if relatives of the deceased man had decided to make a mesothelioma compensation claim.
