The coroner for West Somerset has expressed a hope that mesothelioma cases in the area have reached a peak, as he has already dealt with his second inquest related to this industrial disease in 2009.
The subject of the inquest was diagnosed with the asbestos-related lung cancer in 2006 and died almost two years later. A successful industrial disease compensation claim against the factory where the man believed he contracted his lung disease has been made; his is not the only asbestos compensation claim made by an ex-employee of this business.
The coroner said, "I have been sat here for over 40 years and a couple of factors concern me.
"One is this factory where I've had case after case of people coming in contact with asbestos and getting mesothelioma.
"Secondly, I dealt with an increased number of cases last year, and this is the second case this year.
"I'm hoping we are coming to a peak very shortly then hopefully it will clear."
Mesothelioma figures for Somerset are generally lower than the average for the country.
