A woman who lost her leg in a catastrophically mismanaged procedure to excise inflamed tissue from her right knee has secured a medical negligence settlement worth more than £1 million.
During February 2007 the 37-year-old was admitted to a hospital in Ipswich for what should have been a routine procedure; however, difficulties in ensuring normal blood circulation meant that doctors were left with no choice but to amputate her leg above the left knee.
The medical negligence claimant said that although injury compensation "can never compensate for the loss of a limb… it can make it easier to overcome the practical issues."
"The size of the settlement reflects the fact that I am not yet 40 and the whole of the rest of my life has been irrevocably changed by the amputation," she added.
While the medical negligence solicitor who represented the woman's medical accident claim said that "the settlement takes account of many factors including her reduced long-term mobility; the treatment and care she may require as she gets older; and her need to find a new source of employment as well, of course, as compensation for the injury itself."
