A six-year-old girl who was born with brain damage following failures made by obstetric staff at a hospital in Stevenage has been awarded a multi-million pound settlement of medical negligence compensation.
It was heard that the girl, who was deprived of oxygen during delivery and born clinically dead, suffers from cerebral palsy and needs round-the-clock care. Her family's personal injury solicitor argued that she would probably have been born complication-free had medical staff recognised her prenatal distress.
The judge hearing the medical negligence compensation claim commented, "I am sure that in the six-and-a-half-years since she has been born there have been moments of great difficulty and sadness.
"But also I've seen photos of her looking delightful and very happy, and I'm sure there have been times when she has given you great joy as well as sadness.
"I hope that the joy will predominate in the future."
North Hertfordshire NHS Trust admitted liability for the brain injury claim and offered an apology.
The action was settled for a £2.4 million medical negligence compensation lump sum together with a series of ongoing payments that will be paid for the rest of the girl's life.
