No win, no fee solicitors are predicting that East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust could be hit with a spate of medical negligence claims following the revelation that one of its hospitals failed to diagnose breast cancer in 14 women. They also said that the case was "frighteningly similar" to one in Manchester that resulted in medical negligence claims being settled for hundreds of thousands of pounds.
"It is a concern to see further mistakes being made yet again in respect of breast screening which is a vital part of breast cancer prevention and treatment, said a spokesperson from a UK medical negligence solicitor.
"My sympathies go out to the women affected as we know from experience such cases can lead to a range of emotions from resignation to anger and the need for explanations.
"East Lancashire Hospitals Trust has confirmed these women had their cancer diagnosed later than should have been the case. Where their prognosis has been affected because of any delay, they may have a compensation claim and should seek specialist advice."
The revelation of the diagnostic failure only came to light after concerns were expressed about the work of a consultant radiologist; 335 mammograms had to be reexamined, which resulted in 14 women receiving a breast cancer diagnosis.
East Lancashire Hospitals Trust says that it is yet to receive a medical negligence claims from any of the affected patients.
