Cash paid out for medical negligence claims in Scotland soared by three times last year, it has been revealed in the Scottish Parliament.
Medical negligence compensation payments rose to £21.5 million, from £7.7 million, although a government spokesperson claimed claim numbers were "relatively stable".
Tories in the Scottish Parliament were reported to have criticised the large increase after health secretary Nicola Sturgeon failed to explain how the figures were treble the previous year.
Scottish Conservative public health spokesman Jackson Carlaw queried accountability over the issue, wanting to know how the government would solve the problem of a 300% increase in the claims bill, and whether health services would be affected as a result.
The government spokesperson said there was a major rise in birth-type claims that had taken years to resolve, saying the surge in payouts was due to higher-than-average numbers of bigger settlements in XX20XXs.
