A Cornwall work accident has resulted in a hotel receiving a fine for breaching Health and Safety regulations. This may enable the accident victim, who received an electrical shock from the kitchen equipment he was using, to launch a personal injury compensation claim.
The man had been using a meat slicer, which had entered such a state of disrepair that the whole body of the machine had become live. A very recent risk assessment had passed the slicer for use, despite its wiring having become dangerously frayed and the Perspex safety shield having been removed.
The prosecuting personal injury lawyer said, "The machine was generally dangerous and not just electrically so, and its condition was indicative of the failure on the part of the company to consider the safety of its machinery and affects on employees.
"It was an electrical accident that could have resulted in more serious injury or death."
A local environmental health spokesperson said, "Thankfully, cases such as these are rare, but the serious nature of this accident was reflected in the level of the fine issued by the magistrates.
"I would like to remind all businesses of the importance of regularly checking equipment in the workplace."
No comment has been made on whether the worker intends to make a work accident compensation claim.
