Man suffered fatal injuries in fall from unguarded walkway

An energy company has been fined for the death of an employee following an accident at work.

The employee was working at a South Wales power station when the fatal accident took place in June 2007. Working with a team of seven others, the man was employed as a maintenance worker to carry out urgent work on a water cooling system.

The man suffered multiple serious injuries when he fell through an unprotected platform to the floor 12 metres below. He did not see an opening in the walkway as, at the time, the electric lights were faced towards his colleagues doing grinding work.

In an inspection carried out by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) it was discovered that the open part of the walkway was unprotected and insufficient safety precautions had been taken to prevent a fall from height.

The energy company which employed the man has been fined £510,000 after pleading guilty to breaking the health and safety guidelines that related to the accident at work.
