A woman from Birkenhead in Merseyside who injured herself when she entered a misadjusted lift has won a personal injury compensation claim of £3,250 almost four years after the accident at work occurred.
In October 2004, the woman was employed by The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and, when entering a lift in the building in which she worked, she fell over the misaligned ledge of a lift entrance.
The lift had arrived and the interior floor of the elevator carriage was several inches lower than the external floor. The woman fell in to the lift, injuring her back, hip and knee.
The woman's legal representative commented, "The lift should have been properly maintained to ensure that anyone entering could do so safely. "A claim was initiated against her employers who in turned blamed various contractors who carry out maintenance for the lifts in the building. It was therefore necessary for us to issue court proceedings against four defendants. "The case was eventually settled against all four of them, each accepting liability," she added.
The woman was aided in her successful personal injury compensation claim against her employers and sub-contractors by the Public and Commercial Services union.
