A Suffolk man who went on holiday to Europe with a severe neck injury sparked an international manhunt, newspapers have reported.
Benjamin O'Connor was pursued by Interpol and the Dutch authorities after jetting off to Holland unaware that his life was in danger from his serious personal injuries.
Only days earlier the 29-year-old had been involved in a car accident near his Bury St Edmunds home and had been taken to hospital for a check-up. He was given X-rays and was examined by nurses but no injuries could be found and he was discharged.
Several days later, however, the X-rays were checked again and it was revealed that Mr O'Connor had in fact broken his neck. Attempts to contact him proved fruitless and hospital staff soon discovered that he had flown to Amsterdam for a short trip.
Police in the Netherlands, as well as Interpol, were notified that a man with a potentially fatal neck injury was holidaying in the Dutch capital. He was eventually found, notified of his condition and repatriated to the UK.
A spokeswoman from Suffolk Police told reporters, "We have been informed that Mr O'Connor has returned to his home.
"He is currently in the process of seeking treatment for his injuries at a local hospital."
It is not known if Mr O'Connor is planning to pursue a medical negligence compensation claim against the hospital responsible for failing to identify his neck injury.
