Research for the Foreign Office shows that over-eager Britons are more likely to have a holiday accident caused by a crash on foreign roads.
Causes such as driving on the wrong side of the road, unfamiliarity with the rented vehicle and driver fatigue all add to the likelihood of having a car accident while abroad.
Professor Geoff Beattie, of Manchester University, who was involved in the research, said, "People are usually in a happy-go-lucky holiday mood when they hire a car or moped abroad, but what they really need to consider is that the chances of having an accident and getting injured really are increased by rushing onto the roads."
The research findings come as a quarter of young, independent travellers admit to driving or being the passenger of a moped or quad bike without first checking if their insurance policy covers them.
Tourists are around three times more likely to be involved in road accidents than the locals so it is, therefore, vital that anyone intending to drive abroad is aware of local driving laws and has checked that their travel insurance covers them.
Drivers intent on getting straight into the hire car from the airport increase their chances of a car accident and are more likely to need to make a compensation claim for a holiday accident involving a car crash.
