School children in Aberdeen, Scotland, were upset and shocked when they witnessed their local lollipop lady in collision with a school bus and suffering a severe head injury as a result.
The 79-year-old woman had finished taking children safely to the other side of the road when she was hit as she crossed back over. No children were injured and the bus driver was unhurt, but the elderly woman, who had been the lollipop lady for about 10 years, had to be taken to hospital with serious injuries and later died.
The head teacher of the primary school said, "This is devastating news for the school community and our thoughts and sympathies are with her family and friends at this difficult time".
The Ayr police officer in charge of the investigation into the crash explained that road policing officers were carrying out a detailed examination at the scene and that the investigation team was "working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident".
Should members of the lollipop lady's family decide to make a compensation claim for their loss, then liability for the accident and the woman's subsequent head injury would first have to be determined before any legal action could be commenced.
