A grandmother from Peterborough has been awarded a substantial pay-out in personal injury compensation after a slip, trip and fall accident.
The 73-year-old had been shopping at a well-known supermarket in Rivergate, Cambridgeshire, when she slipped on some discarded vegetables that had been left on the floor, despite not being in the fruit and veg aisle at the time.
A member of staff at the store helped her up and called an ambulance which took the grandmother-of-five to Peterborough District Hospital.
The elderly woman sustained serious personal injuries including a fractured tibial plateau, which is part of the knee joint. Her injuries were so severe the woman spent five days in hospital and was forced to stay housebound for six months after the accident.
In an out-of-court settlement the supermarket chain awarded the woman an unknown amount of personal injury compensation, which, due to the extent of the injuries sustained, is likely to have been a substantial amount.
Since the personal injury compensation pay-out, the supermarket has stated that processes are in place to prevent this kind of accident from occurring in stores; however on this occasion the high standards set out had not been achieved.
