Dustman may claim for personal injury caused by glass

A dustman suffered a personal injury when he was cut by broken glass which a householder had put out with their rubbish in a black plastic sack.

The man suffered the accident at work in the New Forest and needed hospital treatment for his injuries.

It was the third time in eight years dustmen from the council have reported hurting their hands in work-related injuries.

To avoid similar incidents to the employees, council officials are asking residents to wrap broken glass and other items such as smashed crockery in thick newspaper, secure it into a parcel and tape a note stating ‘broken glass' onto the rubbish sack.

If people need to dispose of medical items such as syringes, local authorities operate special collecting services for these items.

It is not known if the dustman intends to make a personal injury compensation claim against the householder who left the glass in the bag or his employers in relation to the work accident.
