Father of amputee patient seeks compensation from NHS

The father of a six-year-old girl is seeking medical negligence compensation after his daughter had to have both her legs amputated.

The young girl was only ten months old when she was taken to the accident and emergency unit of Peterborough District Hospital, suffering with a skin infection. However, the hospital refused to admit the child and the father was told to take her home and treat her with paracetamol.

The following morning the girl's condition had worsened and she was taken back to the hospital where she was again sent home. On the third visit the girl was admitted and diagnosed as suffering from severe personal injuries, including a bleeding disorder known as coagulopathy as well as septicaemic shock and multi organ failure. Her condition was so serious that hospital staff were forced to amputate both of her legs.

The father of the young girl claims that had the child been admitted in the first instance her skin condition could have been treated and it is likely she would have made a full recovery.

The father has now launched a medical negligence compensation claim against Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on behalf of his daughter, claiming that the hospital had been negligent by not admitting the girl sooner.
