GPs and other UK medics are watching out for people attempting to fake personal injuries and defraud insurers and employers, according to a senior company doctor.
Dr Harry Brunjes has highlighted problems with accident, work-related and other personal injury frauds after research revealed false compensation claims have been increasing, especially in the recession.
About two thirds of GPs surveyed reported an increase in fake injury claims - such as whiplash - with a quarter recording an extra surge since the beginning of the economic downturn.
As chairman at the Premier Medical Group - medical advice provider for LV=, Dr Brunjes said, "The medical profession always has been, but is increasingly sensitive to individuals who could potentially defraud their employer or insurer as a result of exaggeration or even fabrication of clinical signs and symptoms."
The cost to the NHS of all types of personal injury claims is estimated at £8million while insurance companies foot a staggering £2billion bill.
Whiplash is the most common personal injury fraud, often pursued by no win, no fee solicitors on behalf of claimants, putting up premiums for all motorists by about 20 per cent.
