A travelling fairground operator whose ride collapsed and caused personal injury to eight people has been fined, as has the inspector who passed the Hellraiser fit for use.
At Ipswich Crown Court, the owner, who had admitted a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) charge of failing to maintain the spinning ride, which collapsed at an event in Long Melford, Suffolk, in November 2007, was fined £2,000.
Because of the poor maintenance, several cars came loose from their mountings and crashed into each other, trapping two people on the ride and injuring others who needed hospital treatment.
An independent fairground equipment examiner, who failed to spot that the crash was likely to occur because of the ride's poor maintenance, was fined £2,000 and his business was fined £8,000.
It is not known if any of the victims will be pursuing an injury accident compensation claim.
An HSE inspector said the incident at The Big Night Out could have proved fatal and showed amusement ride owners and examiners that public safety was of paramount importance to remove the risk of personal injury.
