A worker at an animal feed factory has sustained serious personal injuries after losing two fingers in an accident at work.
The 47-year-old employee had been working at the factory in Lancashire when he attempted to clear a blockage in one of the machines located on the third floor of the premises.
As the employee carried out his task a co-worker in the control room on the ground floor of the factory turned the machine on causing the man to lose two of his fingers in the machine.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the worker carrying out the cleaning work had failed to shut down the machine as the isolator switch was beyond his reach three metres above the ground.
It was also revealed that the safety guard which prevented workers accessing the moving parts of the machine had not been in place at the time of the incident.
As a result of the accident at work, the company was fined £7,000 and ordered to pay a total of £3,614 in court costs at Accrington Magistrates' Court.
